The day seemed perfect to wander around the city, aimlessly in search of ice cream - knowing in Portland, ME it wouldn’t be too hard to find. Undeterred as clouds descended and rain began spitting, we ventured through Old Port and happened upon Beal’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream. Nestled within historic downtown, peeking out from it’s sloping street where the cobblestones of Moulton meet Wharf, Beal’s offers the feeling of visiting a shop “under the stairs.”
Once inside, the shop reveals a standard scene with two displays, seating and family friendly murals painted on the walls. Their handmade ice cream encompasses classic flavors, along with some intriguing oddities we were eager to try - including Teaberry, a wintergreen mint milder than the usual spearmint.
Settling on Pistachio Nut and Cherry Flip, we carried our cups across town, window shopping and laughing into the mist as we finished our scoops. Though the ice cream may not have blown our socks clean off, we had to smile at the fun of munching on a maraschino cherry mixed into a homemade ice cream swirl. The spark of creativity amongst classic flavors is certainly there, adding some fun to an otherwise dreary afternoon.
